Stroke is the No. 3 killer of African Americans and the third leading cause of death in Missouri and Illinois.
Risk factors for heart disease and stroke are disproportionately high among African Americans; prevalence of hypertension in African Americans in the U.S. is among the highest in the world.
African Americans develop high blood pressure at an earlier age; and 58-68% of African American men and women are either overweight or obese. Because of these risk factors, it’s no surprise that young African Americans have a 2-3 fold greater risk of stroke.
