Honoring Our Veterans

veteransTomorrow is Veterans Day, an an official United States federal holiday that is observed annually on November 11, honoring people who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. It coincides with other holidays including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, which are celebrated in other parts of the world and also mark the anniversary of the end of World War I (major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect). The United States also originally observed Armistice Day; it then evolved into the current Veterans Day holiday in 1954.

On November 11, many Americans observe the day by attending ceremonies and parades that are dedicated to honoring the troops for their service. These often allow veterans to speak about their time in the service and give Americans the opportunity to personally thank veterans for their sacrifice.

To also thank veterans for their service many places such Great Clips is giving anyone who gets a haircut on November 11 will receive a card that a veteran or active-duty military service member can later use for a free haircut; UFC Gyms are giving free gym access to those with military ID and their families from November 11 to 15; Meineke offers free oil changes with military ID on Veterans Day; and national park admission is free for everyone on November 11.

As for free food and drink, these places are offering specials to veterans. Unless otherwise stated, the offers are valid on November 11 only. In all cases, be sure to bring ID with proof of status as a current or former member of the military.

Here are other ways to express your gratitude to  veterans and on all other days:

  1. A great way to say “Thank you veterans” is to show up. There are many Veterans Day events – go to one and bring your family.
  2. Seek out opportunities to hire veterans. Unemployment for veterans is higher than average. Yet, veterans are disciplined, hard working and loyal. I’m fortunate to have worked with several young people who joined the military. They were amazing employees.
  3. Because there isn’t enough work for all of the military personnel who have returned home, many of them survive on odd jobs. What do you need done around your house? Post your odd jobs on Hire Patriots and give back to those who have given so much. Plus, you’ll get someone who knows how to get a job done.
  4. Say, “thank you for your service” when you see people in uniform.
  5. Encourage your local schools to have a Veterans Day Discussion.  There’s also a great program called Take a Veteran to School Day that brings Veterans into the classroom to share their experiences.
  6. Pay for lunch, a drink or dessert when you see a military person in a restaurant.
  7. Offer a ride. Many veterans don’t have transportation to and from their medical appointments at VA Hospitals. You can volunteer as a van driver for Disabled American Veterans.
  8. Support our troops by supporting families who have a member deployed. The families are often forgotten. Thank them for their sacrifices. Offer to help them around the house. Babysit. Let them know you recognize their sacrifice and ask how you can help.
  9. Volunteer or donate to a nonprofit that supports veterans.
  10. Surprise a veteran by raking his/her leaves, washing their car, or something else.

March Madness Marketing…Getting In On The Action!

0318_madness-800x480The craziness of March Madness is already underway, and the buzz surrounding the event is in full force. March Madness is a marketer’s dream as it presents great opportunities for reaching a broad audience, and it’s not too late to hop on the marketing bandwagon. This is everything you need to know to make the most of the tournament’s marketing potential:

Why does March Madness attract so much attention?
Partially because the NCAA has a penchant for alliteration (March Madness, Sweet 16, Final Four) and partially because the event consistently draws a large and diverse crowd. Whether you live for these three weeks in March or have never watched the entirety of a basketball game in your life, chances are you’ll still get involved with March Madness in some way. The ritualistic filling-out of brackets allows people to interact with the event outside of watching the games and generates buzz in homes, offices, bars and on social media. As USA TODAY writer Bruce Horovitz explained it, “March Madness is a marketing mix that advertisers crave but can rarely find. It has wide appeal to a very young and desirable audience. It’s live sports — one of the few things that’s TiVo proof. And March Madness is a social media gabfest.”

How are big brands using March Madness in their marketing?
Several brands are debuting new ads with celebrity spokespeople. Burger King’s TV spot features five-time NBA All-Star Chris Webber, Pizza Hut’s WingStreet ad stars ESPN anchor Scott Van Pelt, and Audi’s new ad features comedian Ricky Gervais.

Other brands are focusing on experiential marketing. Bud Light is setting up a temporary Bud Light Hotel in downtown Dallas, complete with Bud Light-branded signage, pillow cases, and key cards. The hotel will also host live concerts and celebrity players.shutterstock_9560890

Another major trend this year is ambush marketing. Brands are piggybacking on the event without dealing with the outrageous expense of having in-game advertising. Companies using this approach include Pizza Hut (giving away the chance to win free pizzas), Hooter’s (offering free fried pickles) and Spam (creating viral videos of a goofy character named “Sir Can A Lot”).

How can you get in on the marketing action?
1. Send out email blasts with a special offer.
2. Create a display ad to run on social media platforms.
3. Incorporate March Madness into your daily conversation with social media followers.
4. Hold bracket contests.
5. Tie-in a local team to make the marketing specific to your community.
6. Host viewing parties for your customers at your store/office or another nearby venue.
