5 Steps to Growing Your Brand on Instagram

picture itInstagram, the image-based social networking platform, has quickly become one of the most effective ways to market yourself or your business. On Forbes.com, Griffin Thall, the CEO and co-founder of Pura Vida Bracelets shares these five steps for building your brand on Instagram:

Find your niche
Every person or brand must have a niche– a way to set yourself or your business a part from everyone and everything else. With out a niche, you will blend in and become lost in the social media noise. Finding your niche is creating your personality. To get started, first ask yourself: what am I good at? What do I enjoy doing? What is my brand’s main purpose? You need to not only be unique, honest, and sincere, but also somewhat mysterious. Be sure to keep your purpose and persona clear but always strive to have people wanting to know more. If people are confused at what you do in the first few seconds, you’ve lost them for good.

Find your influencers
Once you’ve found your niche, the next step is to find your influencers. An influencer on Instagram is someone who has power, reach and authority among their followers. Pairing your brand with the right voice can be the single most important force in getting the word out. Who do you want talking about your brand and sharing your story? Start with people who have between 5k and 25k followers and classify them as your “content producers” or entry-level influencers.

Find your product photographers
Once you’ve found your potential influencers, you need to find product photographers. These Instagram users are similar to influencers, but you are not looking to them for outreach purposes, you are looking to them for high-quality lifestyle or product photos of your brand in action.

Send out samples
Once your list of influencers and photographers is finalized, the next step is to send out samples. To do this, first draft up a very simple and to-the-point email to these Instagram pros. These days, anyone can detect a “spam” or templated email from a mile away, so take your time to draft up a unique email that caters exactly to the person you’re trying to target. Remember, these influencers are sorting through hundreds of emails a day just like you, so your first go is very important.

Repeat
Creating a “system” and repeating the steps above is key to growing your brand on Instagram.

Creating a Logo that Makes a Good Impression

Hiring-a-good-logo-designing-company-to-create-your-logoAs the old adage goes, you only get one chance to make a good impression. And, for small businesses, it’s vital to make a good impression with branding. Without a strong logo, your branding will fail to send the message that you do great work.

Consider these five tips from Entrepreneur.com:

Don’t be generic.
Your logo needs to convey what you do and who you are, and leave a positive brand impression. That’s why small business logo design is a different animal from corporate logo design. Corporations can throw enough money into marketing to ensure that people associate any symbol or graphic with their name. Small businesses don’t have that luxury: Each impression is so important. You need to very quickly connect with your audience members and give them something to latch on to — at the same time that you give them something disruptive in your competitive space.

Pick typography that reflects what you stand for.
The vast majority of small business brands are built upon two primary elements: their typographic elements and their graphic or iconic element. Together, these factors form the basic structure for most logo designs. Typography communicates much about your brand — whether it’s a brand that’s whimsical or elegant, established or common, fresh or futuristic. Your typography should be in harmony with, and balance with, the graphic or icon in order to optimize the audience’s first impression.

Choose colors wisely.
Certain industries have very typical color palettes that are traditional to their industry. For example, heating and air conditioning companies often use red and blue in their branding.

Consider how your logo will be used.
Whenever possible, avoid using a logo that requires a lot of explanation. If your small business relies on outdoor media, such as signs or vehicles, a memorable icon is especially important. One simple test is to cover up the lettering and simply look at the graphic. Does it give the viewer an idea as to the nature of the business?

Hire a pro.
With so much of your success riding on how well your branding performs, this isn’t the place to cut corners. Yet, so many businesses look for the least expensive option, because they don’t understand the value of a good brand and how it will affect their chances of success. The most important part of any branding exercise is an open dialogue between the brand strategist and the client. Choose a firm where you will speak directly with the person developing your brand.

Trick-or-Treating …Safe and Fun for Everyone!

HalloweenSafety1

With Halloween trick-or-treating taking place this weekend, we thought this would be a good idea to share some good tips to make sure everyone has a safe and fun time.

  1. Children under 12 should trick-or-treat and cross streets with an adult. Older kids should stay in groups and let parents know where they are going.
  2. Use (non-toxic) face paint or makeup instead of masks, which may block vision.  If wearing a mask make sure it fits well, and avoid wearing it while you are walking.
  3. Make it easier to be seen. Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers. Use flashlights and glow sticks.
  4. Only go to homes with a porch light. Never enter a strangers home or car for treats.
  5. Cross at crosswalks, make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them. Watch for cars in driveways, do not cross between parked cars. Walk on sidewalks or paths.
  6. Watch for cars that are turning or backing up. Keep heads up, walk don’t run.  Never dart out into the street, avoid running through yards and alleys.
  7. Adults put electronic devices down, remember this night is for children, and if you are not focused on them, bad things can happen. Only takes a second.
  8. Do not eat your goodies until a responsible adult has given their okay. Eat only factory wrapped candy, avoid home treats and unwrapped or suspicious items.

Tips for Parents and Homeowners:

  1. Young children should be with an adult
  2. Older children should know how to reach you in an emergency.
  3. Always know where your child is going and have a predetermined time when they should return home.
  4. Clear your yard of items such as hoses, rakes, toys, leashes, etc, to avoid accidental tripping.
  5. Avoid lighting your lanterns or pumpkins with a real flame.
  6. If using candles keep your walkways and porches clear.

On a more serious note:

  1. Know what other activities your children may be attending, such as parties, school or mall functions, If they are going to be at friends home, get phone number and meet parents.
  2. Explain to children of all ages the difference between harmless tricks and destructive vandalism. Remind them that clean up and damages can ruin Halloween for everyone. And if caught vandalizing they will be held accountable.
  3. Some people think its okay to hurt animals (cats) on this night. Explain to your children  that animal cruelty of any kind is not acceptable and punishable by law.
  4. Make sure that your kids stay away from house that are not well lit, do not go into a home they do not know, get into a car, or go anywhere with a stranger.
  5. Tell your children what to do if someone confronts them: scream as loud as they can to draw attention and to run away as fast as they can to someplace safe.

“Let me give you my business card”

dd122aThe digital world has changed just about everything we do in business — sending mail, signing contracts, attending meetings, even networking. The business card is still one “old school” way of presenting yourself professionally.

Think about the number of times you hand out business cards to customers,  future prospects, and other connections.  A memorable business card can be the stepping stone to a great first impression.

Standard cards can do just that, but what if you are looking for something with a little more kick to it. Edge painting, edge coloring, colored edges – call it what you may, is the newest trend in business card design. The process is not new by any means, but it’s definitely getting a lot of exposure these days and with good reason – it makes a huge impact.

Time to Shift Your Focus to Mobile Marketing

Mobile-MarketingIt may seem like an afterthought but mobile-users have skyrocketed in the past year. Time to shift your focus from desktop to mobile and become a better marketer by knowing more about your mobile audience. Here are three key points about mobile marketing:

Mobile App —Analyze your mobile audience (you can find this in your website analytics) and see if a mobile app is necessary, or maybe just a mobile website redesign will suffice. Generally, mobile apps allow for more creativity and better interaction with your users.

Competitors —The key to being more innovative is to analyze your mobile offerings compared to your competitors. If none of your competitors have a mobile app, then it may be time to evaluate your need for one.

Social Media —The last key to mobile marketing is to hook your audience to download the app. How do you do this? Through social media. Utilize the platforms your audience is on and heavily campaign the need for your mobile app while providing a download link.

3 Simple Steps to Help Accomplish Your Goals

bigstock-Achieve-success-15063410Being a business owner is being a leader for your company and employees. You always need to be thinking of the company’s goals and employees’ goals and how they will be beneficial in the future. You can increase the chance of accomplishing those goals by doing these three simple things:

Write goals down —it may sound simple, but writing your goals down increase the chance of accomplishing them by 90 percent. That’s amazing! Write them down and hang them up in your office so you can always be reminded of your goals.

Incentivize —Every business owner is personally and intrinsically motivated, but sometimes, it’s nice to have a little push. Succeed in accomplishing your goals by rewarding yourself and sticking to it. Choose items or experiences to reward yourself with that you truly yearn for.

Create little goals —Break down your lofty 5- and 10-year goals into little ones. Break them down into 1-year goals and even monthly goals. Accomplishing these items help accomplish the bigger goals.

3 Ways to Freshen up Your Website

website artWe often turn our attention to email marketing or direct mail, billboards or other advertisements. But, let’s turn our direction to one of the most powerful tools for your company—your website.

A website not only allows people to get to know your company before using its products and services, but it is also a great place to establish yourself as an industry authority. In order to do that, you need to continually add vitality. Take a look at these three ways to freshen up your website:

Great copy —Every company needs to tell their unique story to the public. Including your story on your website will convey to the masses who you are and what you stand for. But, make sure to keep a few eyes on the copy throughout the website. It needs to be well-edited and succinct.

Evergreen content —Draw visitors to your website with meaningful blog content. Write content that that is going to last and will be substantive in a year or two. Not every blog post needs to be this way, but write one “evergreen” post out of five blog posts.

Beautiful design —Convey your message in the right way with a beautiful website design. More often than not, people get lost in a disorganized website rather than seeing the message. Not every design fits every company, so think about your company’s tone. Think about having a bold homepage, clear navigation or calls to action on each page.
